Virtual World News

The EDEN CoP’s immersive learning lesson “Avian Influenza Prevention in Backyard Flocks” was selected to appear in Second Life’s Fall 2011 Academic Showcase. The showcase can be seen at http://secondlife.com/destinations/academic providing an overview of quality interactive learning experiences available to the public in the Second Life virtual world.

eXtension maintains the four Morrill regions in Second Life, offering a variety of learning environments and meeting spaces open to anyone. In August, eXtension added two new outposts in the growing “metaverse”. A four-region “Extension” mini-grid was launched in OpenSim to be used for learning about this open source platform and to function as a building sandbox. A single region named “Cooperative Extension” has been created in the virtual world Avination. This location will provide a full-featured alternative to Second Life and access to a fast-growing Avination user base. Anyone with an eXtensionID is welcome to create content in these spaces; technical assistance will be provided.

Plan to be online Tuesday, October 18 for Paulette Robinson’s session on virtual worlds at the National eXtension Virtual Conference. Paulette, Assistant Dean for Teaching, Learning, & Technology at National Defense University, leads the 1600-member Federal Consortium for Virtual Worlds. She also is working as a partner with USDA’s CIO Chris North to develop vGov, a secure virtual world for government cross-collaboration.

The 2011 Virtual State Fair event will be held in Second Life October 26-29, 2011. This year’s fair will offer contests, live music, workshops, and guided tours of land grant university activities in Second Life. We are currently seeking volunteers to help with the festivities. Detailed information on how to attend the fair will be available in October’s update.

Please contact luann.phillips@extension.org for information about how to connect to the new regions, to request a training session or presentation, or to volunteer for the Virtual State Fair.
