2013 eXtension Fellowship awarded to Megan O’Neil

The 2013 eXtension Fellowship has been awarded to Megan O’Neil a Senior Agent at the University of Maryland Extension. O’Neil’s project, Health Insurance Literacy–Ask an Expert, will focus on using the eXtension Ask an Expert application as a tool for a needs assessment and educational delivery of information on health insurance. She will work in partnership with the multi-state Health Insurance Literacy Initiative. This is an exciting and timely project that will leverage the expertise of Extension faculty using eXtension technology and social media. Expected outcomes include an increased capacity to determine consumer needs for information on health insurance, an increased capacity to provide answers to health insurance related questions from consumers and an increased visibility of the Ask an Expert application.

We’re very pleased that Megan was awarded this Fellowship. Not only will it help her professional development but it will help her advance the work we’ve begun in Maryland and through a multi-state initiative launched to position Extension as a leader in educating consumers about health insurance.

Thank you, Bonnie. As you know, all the levers on health care in America are being flipped practically at once. People will need to have real-time sound research based information to make health insurance decisions that are right for them financial and on other levels. eXtension, Extension Agents, and the Ask an Expert System will step up to meet the need. If anyone has any input at all that will benefit this project or people in their commmunities, your comments and inputs will be welcomed, please email oneil@umd.edu.

Thank you again, everyone! Starting to roll. Getting remaining i’s and t’s crossed on making the arrangement formal and starting to get creative! Watch for updates!! Will be recruiting “expert answerers” for the Health Insurance plan selection questions that we hope will roll in to AaE as we get closer to fall open enrollment. Please encourage anyone in your respective states who has an interest in this to contact me oneil@umd.edu. They certainly DO NOT have to have all the answers and consider themselves an “expert” YET and it is always acceptable to say “I don’t know” and to pass a question to someone who does. :)

Congratulations Megan! I would love to talk with you more about your project. Putting a content wrapper on AaE will be very powerful.
